Goals

This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.

Task List

PLEASE - Requesting that all MALES who carry the surname NORRIS test their DNA and enter their Y DNA as completly as possible - Any level will help, however the BIG Y level will provide the most significant data to isolate our divergent Pedigrees as far back as possible and locate other cousins for collaboration. For those who have not yet investigated their DNA please began with any autosomal test and take advantage of the free data transfer to the FREE FTDNA Family Finder database - this will open an FTDNA account for you which can then be upgraded with the needed Y test starting at whatever level you can afford.

Pedigrees

There are several significant and commonly used reference works which claim Norris lines originating pre-1700 and before the actual common useage of surnames in various societies. Most provide little or no actual sourcing information or documentation other than being collections by individual family researchers which may or may not have have been professionably published and must generally be viewed with a critical eye. Here are some of these and if you have others, please advise us and they will be added here for reference:

1. THE NORRIS FAMILY OF MAYLAND AND VIRGINIA; genealogy of Thomas Norris, 1361-1930, by Major Henry Alexander Davis, Washington D.C. 1941, Indexed, 4 Volumes, 1439 pages. Typescript copy held by LOC and microfilmed in 1988. Work reportedly was compiled from surveys sent to all known Norris families in the USA during the 1920's & 1930's. Available online from several sites.

2.THE NORRIS FAMILY OF MARYLAND, by Thomas M. Meyers, 1916, William M Clemens Publisher, indexed 119 pages.

Hi, I'm interested in researching the Norris surname in South Africa. I hope to be able to trace it back to their roots in the UK I presume. The Norris name enters my family tree in the early to mid 1800s in the Cape Province.

Looking for my g g grandmother Mary Norris Married Felix Cleary Ballyneale Kilkenny Tipperary Ireland. Child.. Julia Cleary my g grandmother who emigrated to Australia 1800s
Hi! As a result of research by my now deceased grandfather Alan Norris I believe my family originate from Galveston Texas. My great great grandfather William Jefferson Norris was a "cotton Jobber" and a boxer who we believe acted as a sparring partner for Jack Johnson. When Jack Johnson came over to the UK for a fight William J Norris came with him and met his future wife. He stayed and settled in Salford. I have a copy of one of his marriage certificates where he is listed as a widower so this is not his first marriage. I have also found records for my great grandfatherSydney James Norris and his siblings William Albert and Eleanor. I also have pictures of my great grandfather. I would be interested to find anyone who has traced this line or knows of any information of this line. Thanks

My Norris line came into Kentucky through the Cumberland Gap in the late 1700's. I have a tree that was done by a cousin.

I have followed my own line back to Maryland in the late 1600's I have tested Y-DNA thru 111Markers and the Big Y . My Haplogroup is the old 23andme I2b1* or as currently known down thru I-Z79+

The majority of Norrisses seem to be in the R1 group and I would like to find others looking for the USA immigrant ancestor of the I2 Norris lines.
